Abstract/ invitation text:

Cities like London and Berlin market themselves prominently through their club culture. In both cities, however, the increasing neoliberalization and commercialization of music and culture has also fuelled forms of protest and resistant practices. Hardcore techno (gabber, breakcore, speedcore, etc.) and hard techno (tekkno) have rarely been featured in the narratives of electronic music and club culture or in research on the subject. Yet they are an important aspect when it comes to developing alternative visions beyond a hypercapitalistic economized society.
I will use video and audio examples to illustrate what defines hardcore techno genres such as gabber, breakcore or speedcore, and use two examples from soundsystem culture – the Berlin Fuckparade and the Free Tekkno/Teknival movement – to show what significance rave culture can have in the struggle for free spaces and for non-commercial ways of partying.
